The Battle of Chattanooga, featuring two of the area’s top vintage baseball clubs, didn’t disappoint on Saturday on the Polo Field at the 6th Cavalry Museum.

Playing in front of a crowd of more than 150 spectators in lawn chairs with temperatures climbing in the 90s and dressed in their usual old-fashion style uniforms, the Mountain City Club gentleman bested the Lightfoot by a final score of 20 tallies to 17.

Lightfoot overcame a 10-run third inning by Mountain City and brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth.

Chris McKeever, executive director of the 6th Cavalry Museum, said both teams were to be commended as well as the community for the role they’re playing in keeping the sport’s history alive

“I love vintage base ball,” she said. “It’s free, you get to come out to the post and experience the general comradery and gentile of the way base ball was once played,” she said.

McKeever said everyone that travels to Catoosa County has something positive to say about their experience, which includes touring the 6th Cavalry Museum.

“We have people that come to every match,” she said. “They don’t have anyone playing, and may or may not have been a base ball player. They just love coming out and enjoying this.”

Mason Ingle, an avid baseball player and third baseman, said enjoyed cheering on his uncle Scott “Smokey” Herpst.

“I love it when Smokey gets a good hits,” he said.

Ingle had plenty to cheer for despite the loss. Herpst hit the longest ball he’s hit in two years for a double.

Isaac Morrison said he knows all the players on the Lightfoot, but his favorite was his father David “Happy” Morrison. He catches and pitches while the seven-year-old soccer player utilizes his math skills.

“I like to sit in the shade and help with the score board,” he said. “I just enjoy watching the game, and knowing the score.”

Morrison said he’s hoping to put up even more tallies when league play resumes in two weeks.
