One of Joan’s earliest jobs was as a switchboard operator at Davenport Hosiery Mills in Chattanooga. It suited her personality to a tee. She loved to engage people and found the job to be very fulfilling.

During her working career Joan also was employed by Ling Faidley Printing Company, Chap Nell Manufacturing Company and the Walker County Department of Education where she worked 16 years before retiring.

In 2003, at the age of 73, she penned her first book, a Christian romance novel called “Willow Place.” That would be followed by a sequel and two other books.

But the book she enjoyed and referred to the most was the Bible. The pages of her personal Bible are laden with highlights, underlined passages and notes of insight in the margins.
