Trojans belt Bowdon in two-game sweep Ramblers break through in 10th against Cohulla Creek

Gordon Lee and Bowdon, ranked No. 2 and No. 8, respective­ly in the Class A (Public School) state rankings, opened Region 6 play last week with a big home-and-home series.

But both at home and on the road, the Trojans were simply dominant.

After taking a win over the Red Devils in Chickamaug­a last Tuesday, Gordon Lee traveled to Bowdon on Friday and swatted three homers in a 14-2 rout that moved them to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in region play.

In the series opener, the Trojans got four strong innings on the mound from freshman Jake Poindexter and used a big first inning to take the win.

Cy Horton touched up Poindexter for a solo homer in the top of the first, but the righty would strikeout six of the first eight batters he faced in the first two innings. He would give up just two more hits and finished with eight strikeouts without issuing a single walk.

The Trojans would get the run back and more in the bottom of the first. They loaded the bases for Austin Thompson, who ripped a two-out, two-strike offering from Bowdon starter Trent Estes to plate the tying and goahead runs.

It took a little longer than expected, but the Ramblers got off the schnide and claimed their first win of 2018 and the first head coaching win for Chris Base at LaFayette after a 10-inning victory at Coahulla Creek on Friday.

The Colts led 3-2 after five complete, but the Ramblers would scratch out a run in the top of the sixth to knot the score before finally pushing home the eventual game-winner in the 10th.

The Warriors got two hits, including a double, a run scored, four RBIs and three stolen bases from the red-hot Andrew Brock in a win at LaFayette last Monday.

Down by one after three innings, LFO would score four times in the top of the fourth. Matthew Trusley got the inning going with a double and scored on a Jake Bass single. got the win for the Ramblers in a relief appearance. He worked five innings, striking out eight and walking five without allowing an earned run. Blake Guffey got the start and went four innings, striking out two, walking one and giving up just one earned run. John James worked the 10th and got the save.

LaFayette had nine total hits, paced by a 2-for-3 day from freshman Dylan Deering. Stephenson, Jack Martin, A.J. Buck, Andrew Pendergras­s, Blake Mann, Levi Pettigrew and Trent Currie all had one hit.

Coahulla Creek 14, LaFayette 4

On Thursday, the Ramblers trailed 6-3 after five innings, but gave up eight runs in the top of the sixth and dropped a decision to the visiting Colts in the first game of the homeand-home

series.

Stephenson was 3-for-3 for LaFayette with two doubles and two RBIs, while Mann went 2-3 with a RBI. Davis Richardson threw four innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits.

LFO 7, LaFayette 4

Up 3-2 headed into the fourth, LaFayette couldn’t hang on to the

lead as the Warriors scored four times in the fourth to take the lead for good.

Currie took the loss for the Ramblers, giving up six earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Buck gave up an earned run on one hit and two walks with five strikeouts in three innings.

Buck had a double at

the plate, while Guffey was 2-for-4. Stephenson, Richardson and Mann all had RBIs in the loss for LaFayette (1-8).

LaFayette will open Region 6-AAAA play this week with a Tuesday game at Southeast Whitfield (5:55 p.m.) and a Friday doublehead­er at home against the Raiders, starting at 5:30.
