Heritage teams continue to set pace for Catoosa County high school tennis

The Heritage Lady Generals suffered their first loss of the year last Tuesday, but not before pushing 2017 Class 3A state runner-up Calhoun to the limit, albeit in the 4-1 loss.

The Lady Jackets got out to a fast 2-0 after wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles over Caroline Horsley and Emma Lokey, both by 6-1, 6-0 scores, and they would come to close to clinching the match after winning the opening set in the other three matches.

But Heritage refused to give up as the won the second set in all three matches, forcing 10-point tiebreaker­s to determine the winner.

Junior Maleah McAlister outlasted Calhoun’s Molly Mashburn, 4-6, 6-3, 10-5, to pick up a point for the Navy-and-Red, but the doubles matches would ultimately go the way of the Lady Jackets.

Ruby Christian and Rachel Frankenber­ger defeated Erin Hulsey and Katelyn Burns, 7-5, 3-6, 10-3, at No. 1 doubles, while the team of Neely Abernathy and Emma Blackstock staved off three match points to beat Morgan Phillips and Bailey Christol, 7-5, 3-6, 11-9.

The Generals also lost by a 4-1 count. Individual match results had not been provided as of press time.

Heritage girls 5, Gordon Lee 0

The Lady Generals’ tennis team moved to 3-1 overall after a 5-0 home win over Gordon Lee on Thursday.

Horsley picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jill Bradenburg at No. 1 singles. Lokey won at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 7-5 win over K.G. McElhaney, while McAllister scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory over MaKenzie Bailey at No. 3 singles.

In doubles, Husley and Burns beat Caanan Burnett and Bethany Underwood, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles, while Phillips and Christol won 6-0, 6-0 over Chloe Dockery and Jheri Finch.

Heritage boys 5, Gordon Lee 0

Leo Peace beat Ryan McCurdy, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Tim Grayson picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles against Garrison Heiden, while Davis Kilgo beat Erik Olofsson, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

In doubles action, the team of Blake Richardson and Ethan Bone defeated Owen Frost and Bradley Stoker, 6-2, 6-1, while Cooper Terry and Eric Wootten won by forfeit at No 2 doubles.

Heritage is now 3-1 on the season.

Ringgold loses to Murray County

The No. 1 doubles team of Seth Pittman and Collin Cook improved to 3-0 on the season last Tuesday afternoon, but that would be the only point for the Tigers in a 4-1 home loss to the Indians.

The Lady Tigers dropped a 4-1 decision to the Lady Indians, but Mikayla Dycus was a bright spot as she won her first match of the season at No. 2 singles.

Harper Haupt won in exhibition singles, while Ashley Propst and Maddie Hooper teamed for a win in exhibition doubles.

Ringgold boys split in Calhoun

The Ringgold tennis teams traveled to the city courts in Calhoun on Thursday for two neutral site Region 6-AAA matches against Bremen and Haralson County.

The Tigers lost to Bremen by a 4-0 count, but bounced back to beat Haralson County, 4-0. The Lady Tigers suffered 5-0 losses in both matches.

No individual match results had been reported as of press time.

Back in Catoosa County, the LFO Warriors and Lady Warriors lost matches to visiting Adairsvill­e last Tuesday.
