Ramblers take two of three

- By Scott Herpst

Despite a slow start to the beginning of the year, the LaFayette Ramblers find themselves directly in the thick of the Region 6-AAAA playoff race one week into the region portion of their schedule.

LaFayette 8, Southeast 4

After a 4-3, 10-inning win at Coahulla Creek a few days earlier, the Ramblers headed to Southeast Whitfield on Tuesday and picked up a region victory over the Raiders.

The Ramblers pounded out a seasonhigh 12 hits, including five players with two, as they broke an early 2-2 tie with four runs in the top of the second.

Brady Anderson had two doubles and two RBIs, while Blake Guffey had a double as one of his two hits and drove in three. Blake Mann, Ethan Stephenson and A.J. Buck also had two hits apiece. Stephenson scored twice and Buck picked up an RBI.

Dylan Deering also had an RBI, while Andrew Pendergrass and Trent Currie each collected two stolen bases.

Buck went 6.1 innings to get the win, allowing four runs – two earned – on eight hits with four walks with four strikeouts. Levi Pettigrew closed it out.

Southeast 10, LaFayette 6

Back in Walker County on Friday night, the Raiders took Game 2, which was the opener of a doubleheader.

LaFayette led 1-0 after the first inning of

home on Thursday night and it couldn’t have come at a better time as the two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth gave the Generals the win.

Alex Coulter’s twoout RBI-single in the fourth inning gave Heritage a 1-0 lead and they would stretch out their advantage to 4-0 with a three-spot in the fifth inning. Josh Gibson had a two-run double, which was followed up by an RBI-double from Campbell.

The Bruins scratched out a run in the sixth, but managed to load the

bases against Heritage starter Tripp Church in the seventh. Fatigued, Church was replaced with two outs in the inning, but Bearden greeted Heritage reliever Justin Morris with a three-run double, just out of the reach of a diving Luke Grant, to knock the game at 4-4.

The score would remain tied into the bottom of the eighth when Blake Bryan delivered a single, which was followed by Dockery’s game-winning shot.

Dockery and Gibson both finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Generals, while Hickman also had a double in the win.

Morris got the victory

in a relief appearance. Church went 6.2 innings, allowing four hits, four walks and four earned runs. He finished with 10 strikeouts.

Heritage 8, Northwest 6

The Generals finished off the series sweep with a comefrom-behind win back in Tunnel Hill on Friday.

The Bruins (5-10, 2-4) led 3-0 after two innings and carried a 5-2 lead into the sixth before Heritage (9-5, 6-0) would come charging back. The Generals plated four runs in the top of the inning and countered the Bruins’ game-tying run in the bottom of the inning with two more of their own in the top of the

seventh.

Hickman would get the win for the Generals. He threw 6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits and six walks with two strikeouts. Grant struck out one as he got the final two outs to record the save.

Morris was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Wilcox had two hits, including a double, scored a run and drove in one. Bryce Bird doubled and had two RBIs. Coulter also hit a double, while he and Dockery both collected one RBI each.

Heritage will not take the field again until this Saturday when they travel to East Hamilton (Tenn.) for a 1 p.m. start.
