Heritage girls fall in region showdown with Northwest

- By Scott Herpst

The Heritage Lady Generals’ bid for a regular season region championship suffered a huge blow last Tuesday night as visiting Northwest Whitfield led 3-0 at halftime en route to a 6-0 victory on Jeff Sims Field.

The Lady Bruins improved to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in Region 6-AAAA with the win, while Heritage fell to 9-4-1 overall and 4-1 in region play.

Heritage would need to win at Pickens on April 17 and have Northwest lose their final two region matches to Southeast and LaFayette to claim the region title. However, the Lady Generals would still lock up the No. 2 seed and at least one guaranteed home playoff match with a win over the Dragonettes.

In the nightcap, the Bruins (12-2, 4-0) maintained their spot at the top of the standings in 6-AAAA with a big victory. Heritage fell to 2-9 overall and 0-5 in region play.

LFO girls 2, North Murray 1

The Lady Warriors got a goal from Hannah Elleman and another goal from Faith Jones to score a home victory over North Murray last Tuesday night.

Chelsey Lindsay and Sydney Moss each recorded assists, while Rebecca Leggett made 12 saves to lock up the win for LFO (7-7, 4-4). Alyssa Leverrett and Bailey Sullivan were named as defensive standouts.

Elias Rafael scored the only goal for the Warriors (2-11, 2-6) in the 30th minute of the match. Head coach Tyler Brittingham said the midfield trio of Tyler Moreland, Ethan Wofford and Yousef Hameed played well.

LFO was still without senior offensive captain Braiden Pack, who remains out with an injury, but the Warriors did get back senior defensive captain Bailey Goins, who missed the last three games with an injury.

The Mountaineers remained unbeaten (9-02, 5-0) and in first place in the region.

Murray County sweeps Ringgold

The Ringgold High School soccer teams both got on the scoreboard Tuesday night, but not enough times to get past visiting Murray County, who picked up the Region 6-AAA wins.

The Lady Tigers fell by a 3-1 count to drop to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in region play, while the Tigers are now 0-7 overall and 0-5 in 6-AAA following a 4-1 loss to the Indians.

Individual scoring had not been provided as of press time.
