Homecoming heartbreak: LFO falls to Adairsville

- By Scott Herpst sherpst@npco.com

The Adairsville Tigers came to Tommy Cash Stadium on Friday night and spoiled Homecoming for the LFO Warriors with a 13-12 upset victory, snapping the home team’s four-game winning streak.

LFO would draw first blood with a 30-yard field goal by Alec Gentry and the Warrior defense would get a fumble recovery and an interception - by Jacob King - to preserve the 3-0 lead. But the Tigers would finally get on the board following a blocked punt as Derrick Simmons ran it in from four yards out.

The score would remain 7-3 in favor of the visitors into the third quarter when LFO would turn the ball over on downs. A long drive would set up Mason Boswell on a 3-yard run to extend the lead to 13-3. The extra point was no good.

LFO turned to its ground game late in the third quarter and it would result in a 1-yard run by Nathan Williams just seconds into the fourth quarter following a couple of big gains. Gentry’s kick would pull the Warriors to within three points at 13-10.

LFO would get the ball back after stopping Adairsville on fourth down, but the Red-andWhite would cough up the ball on its ensuing possession. The defense would make a stand to force a punt, but the offense could not get anything going and LFO was force to give the ball back late in the fourth quarter.

Not wanting to fumble on the final play of the game, Adairsville handed it off to Boswell, who ran in the wrong direction all the way into the endzone to give the Warriors a safety. But the final two points were put on the board as the clock went to all zeros, securing the Tigers’ one-point victory.

LFO had 223 yards of offense with 200 coming on the ground. Williams led the way with 93 yards on 15 carries. Boswell, who was shaken up in the first half, returned and finished with 138 yards on 19 carries. Adairsville finished with 213 yards of offense, 162 via the run.

The Warriors (4-2 overall, 3-1 in Region 6-AAA) will be off this week before hosting Coahulla Creek on Oct. 12.
