Area players receive All-state football honors
The start of the new year generally brings with it the announcement of All-state football awards in the state of Georgia and 2019 is no exception.
Three players from area teams were recently recognized as All-state players by two separate publications.
The online site Recruit Georgia announced its All-state teams and two players, both from Catoosa County made the list in Class 3A.
LFO senior punter Charlie Harless was picked to the team as a specialist. The Warrior standout averaged 46.5 yards on 23 punts this past season, one of the top averages in the state.
Also named to the squad was Ringgold senior Andre Tarver, who was selected as a defensive back. The future Mississippi State baseball player racked up 50 tackles, 40 assists and eight tackles for loss. He also caught 34 passes for 405 yards and six TD’S and rushed for 525 yards and five scores on offense.
The Atlanta Journal and Constitution also picked its annual All-state team. Tarver was named honorable mention in Class 3A as a wide receiver and a defensive back, while Ridgeland junior running back Jordan Blackwell was honorable mention in Class 4A.
Blackwell rushed 143 times for the Panthers for 1,122 yards and 15 touchdowns this past season without a single fumble. He also caught 16 passes for 130 yards and two more scores.
The Georgia Sports Writers Association’s All-state Team was slated to be released this week, but not early enough to make today’s edition.
