Sports Shorts: Former LFO hoops standout to play at Morehead State

Jazzmyn Elston, a 2017 graduate of LFO High School, has signed a full scholarshi­p to play basketball for the Eagles of Division I Morehead State University (Ky.), a member of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Elston averaged 20.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.9 steals a game for the Lady Warriors as a senior. She signed with State Fair Community College (Mo.) after high school, where she earned All-region and AllConfere­nce honors as a freshman (12.6 points per game).

The 5-foot-7 guard averaged 15.9 points in 24 games as a sophomore this past season. She shot 43 percent from the field, 33 percent from behind the 3-point line and 83 percent at the free throw line. She is on track to graduate this summer and will have two years of eligibilit­y left at Morehead State. seven innings, allowing two hits, one run, one walk and a career-high seven strikeouts in only his third career collegiate start. He held the Florida offense to an .087 batting average and helped Georgia post its first sweep of Florida since 2006.

Local anglers took five of the top eight spots, including the top three places, at a recent Northwest Georgia High School Anglers Associatio­n fishing tournament at Lake Weiss in Alabama on May 4.

Lafayette’s Kyle Ludy and Rylan Russell took home first place with a haul of 15.50 pounds, just edging out Brayden Milling and J.D. Harris of Ringgold (15.20) and Hunter Richie and Blake Groce of Gordon Lee (14.96). Hunter Brown and Christian Balisteri of Ringgold (12.55) finished in seventh place, one spot ahead of Heritage’s Gunner Lee and Andrew Jones (12.45). equipment and revamping of the greens. Currently, there are new menu items in the grille, with Friday night dining expected to begin in late May.

LFO High School will host its annual softball camp on May 28-30 at the LFO High School field and field house. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 12 noon each day and is open to players ages 6-12 years old.

The $55 registrati­on fee includes a camp T-shirt. Fundamenta­l instructio­n in all areas of softball will be provided by LFO head coach Tony Ellis, LFO’S assistant coaches and LFO high school players.

The annual Jeff Sims Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Thursday, June 20 at Nob North Golf Club. Registrati­on will begin at 11 a.m., followed by lunch at 12 noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Entry fee is $75 per player and hole sponsorshi­ps are available at $100 each. Money raised will go to help fund the Heritage High School football team, as well as the Jeff Sims Memorial Scholarshi­p. The deadline for entry is June 11.
