Gordon Lee eludes Lafayette

- By Scott Herpst

Softball fans in Chickamauga were treated to a good old-fashioned pitchers’ duel this past Wednesday and, in the end, it was the homestanding Gordon Lee Lady Trojans who picked up a hard-fought 3-1 victory over county rival Lafayette in a non-region game for both teams.

Emma Minghini pitched seven innings, scattering six hits and walking one in the victory. She struck out seven batters while the run she allowed was unearned.

Gordon Lee took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Macie Pearson led off the frame with a single before taking second on a sacrifice bunt by Anna Logan. Following a single by Addison Sturdivant, Pearson raced home on a groundball out at first off the bat of Regan Thompson.

The Lady Trojans would give the run back on an error a half-inning later, but it would turn out to be the only run of the night for the visitors. Gordon Lee would tack on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Maddie Clark delivered a clutch two-out, tworun single to score both Allie Farrow and Kirbie Bradley, who both reached base on singles earlier in the inning.

Bradley led Gordon Lee with two hits.

Down 3-1 after the first inning on Thursday, the top-ranked Lady Trojans tied up the game with a pair of runs in the top of the second and went on to a 6-A North victory over the Lady Lions in Dalton.

Gordon Lee took the lead for good after scoring one run in the top of the fourth inning and two runs in the top of the fifth. They would put the game away with a five-spot in the top of the seventh.

Logan was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Pearson had two hits, one RBI and scored three times. Bradley was 2-for3 with a double and three RBIS. Minghini went 2-for4. Emma Langston had a double and Clark chipped in with an RBI.

Langston started the game in the circle, but was replaced after just two-thirds of an inning after giving up three runs on just one hit. Minghini pitched the final 6.1 innings. She gave up four hits, walked three and struck out 10 to pick up the victory in relief for Gordon Lee (8-0, 3-0).
