- By Scott Herpst

The Heritage Generals assumed the lead in the Region 6-AAAA standings last Tuesday night after a 1-0, eight-inning battle against Lafayette, who also came into the game unbeaten in region play.

Junior pitcher Rachel Gibson allowed just two hits and struck out 15 batters in eight innings and delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth for Class 4A’s No. 3-ranked team. Lafayette put a runner at third base with one out in the top of the sixth, but Gibson would get a clutch strikeout for the second out before inducing a groundout to get out of the inning.

In the eighth, slugger Carmen Gayler drew her fourth walk of the night with one out and Savannah Wilson would enter the game as a pinch runner. Wilson would move to second on a single by Bailey Davis before Gibson would line a hit to centerfield to bring in the speedy Wilson from second.

Zoe Wright was the only player in the game with multiple hits as she had two base knocks for Heritage.

The Heritage Generals found themselves trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning against Pickens on Thursday, but stormed back with seven runs in bottom of the fifth to pick up a win in Boynton.
