Lafayette picks up its first win against Dade on Thursday

- By Scott Herpst MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

Dawson Pendergrass picked up 149 yards on the ground and Cody Davis would find the endzone twice as the Ramblers moved to 1-1 on the season with a 20-14 home victory over Dade County on Thursday.

A sack and forced fumble by defensive end Julian Lees and a good return by A.J. Thompson would give the Ramblers good opening field position. Six plays later, David bulled his way in from the 2-yard line with Hunter Jefferies breaking the plane on the conversion. Following a turnover on downs, Davis would score on another short run, this time from a yard out and a missed conversion would keep the score at 14-0 nearing halftime. Pendergrass would preserve the halftime margin by picking off a late pass, which was initially tipped by Lees.

But after failing to gain a first down to start the second half, the Wolverines stunned the Ramblers on a quarterback keeper for 90 yards. The conversion cut the Lafayette lead down to 14-8.

However, Lafayette would answer on the ensuing drive as a long gain by Shenard Goad moved the ball deep into Wolverine territory. Isaiah Mckenzie would take it to the house from 19 yards out, while a missed conversion made the score 20-8.

A bad snap on a punt attempt would give the Wolverines outstanding field position late in the game and a 25-yard TD pass would cut into the Ramblers’ lead. However, it would be the final points of the night for either team.

Davis picked up 32 tough yards on the ground and tied Lees with seven tackles on defense. Pendergrass added six tackles, while Lee also finished with a pair of sacks. Thompson added five stops in the victory.
