Friday, Dec. 13

The Friends of the Gordonlee Mansion will host the annual candleligh­t tours on Dec. 13 and 14 from 6-8 p.m. Plan to visit and enjoy touring the antebellum home decorated with natural cuttings and highlighte­d by candles throughout. Each evening is accented by live seasonal music and cider and cookies after the tour. The entry fee is $5 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under. All proceeds benefit the Friends charity. Saturday, Dec. 14

On Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m., Chickamaug­a and Chattanoog­a National Military Park will present a free 45-minute special program on the local land dealings of Xanders and Thomas Mcfarland in the 1830s. This program will take place at the Chickamaug­a Battlefiel­d Visitor Center. Lafayette’s annual Christmas Bazaar returns for the holidays on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Lafayette Recreation Center. It will be one of the largest indoor Christmas bazaars in North Georgia. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be more than 50 local and regional vendors spread throughout the recreation center with a wide assortment of holiday handcrafte­d items and other goods for sale. Santa and Mrs. Claus will make an appearance from 9-11 a.m. for free photos, so be sure to bring your camera. There will be a Candy Cane Hunt at 10 a.m. on Field 2 for children 8 years old and younger. The Gilbert Elementary Chorus will perform at 10:30 a.m. The North Lafayette Elementary Chorus performs at 11 a.m. and Leap of Faith Dance Studio will be performing at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be available, including chicken and dumplings and hot soup. There will be door prizes available. Free hot chocolate will be provided by World Finance.

All former campers, staff and supporters of Camp New Dawn are invited to “Caroling in The Cove” on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Meet at camp, and in addition to caroling, enter the gingerbrea­d house competitio­n and enjoy refreshmen­ts with new and old friends. This program will take place at the Chickamaug­a Battlefiel­d Visitor Center in Fort Oglethorpe. On July 28, 1832, Thomas G. Mcfarland dipped his pen in ink and elegantly signed a large parchment. His signature certified the truthfulne­ss of a recently completed survey of land on which today’s Chickamaug­a and Chattanoog­a National Military Park sits. Unfortunat­ely, his survey was used to assist Georgia in its land lottery of the Cherokee Nation, which the Mcfarland brothers handsomely benefited.

Sunday, Dec. 15

Monday, Dec. 16

The fourth annual Robert Hitchcox Memorial Blood Drives, sponsored by the Walker County Board of Education and the Chattanoog­a Coca Cola Bottling Company — assisted by Blood Assurance’s North Georgia Advisory Board — will be held Monday, Dec. 16, and Tuesday, Dec. 17. The drives will help Blood Assurance obtain and maintain an adequate inventory to supply much-needed blood for the hospitals in its service area, with each donation saving up to three lives. The first 50 donors at each of the blood drives will receive a Chick-fil-a gift card for a free sandwich or eight-count nuggets and a limited-edition long-sleeve holiday shirt. Every donor will be registered for a flatscreen television, compliment­s of Lafayette Walmart. The Walker County blood drive will be held at Lafayette High School on Monday, Dec. 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the contacts are Damon Raines and Janet Cobb at 706-638-7949. American Legion Post 0339 LaFayette will hold a raffle for a Henry Goldenboy .22 WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire) rifle. This is the second year for such a raffle, with the proceeds going to the veterans of Walker County. The winner of the raffle may choose between the Henry Goldenboy Rifle or a $600 cash prize. Tickets are $5 per ticket or 5 for $20. The drawing will be held on Monday, Dec. 16, and the winner does not need to be present. CHI Memorial’s mobile health coach will provide mammograph­y screenings at Primary Healthcare of Rossville on Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All women should have one screening mammogram between the ages of 35-40. After age 40, a screening mammogram is recommende­d every year. Any woman who meets these age guidelines and has not had a mammogram in the past 12 months may participat­e, with or without insurance. For those with insurance, you must bring your insurance card and a photo ID, such as a driver’s license. Insurance will be filed for you. If you do not have insurance, you may qualify for financial assistance. The Maryellen Locher Breast Center partners with the Georgia Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Program and the Susan G. Komen Foundation to provide eligible uninsured and underinsur­ed women with breast and cervical screenings. If an abnormalit­y is discovered, the diagnostic workup is covered and a financial plan is provided for any follow-up care. Women need to know their doctor’s first and last name.
