Oakwood girls set for state quarterfinals this weekend

The Oakwood Christian Lady Eagles had to settle for the runner-up trophy at the GAPPS Division I-AA Region 1 tournament this past Thursday night in Rome.

The second-seeded Lady Eagles trailed top-seeded Unity Christian at halftime, 22-15, and were not able to make up the deficit in the second half as they fell to the Lady Lions in the title game, 55-42. The game was played at UCS.

The Lady Eagles stayed within striking distance, 34-28, going into the fourth quarter.

However, they were outscored 21-14 in the final period.

It was the third game between the two teams this season. Oakwood took the opener before losing to Unity Christian in the regular season rematch.

Mana Gilchrist had nine points, eight steals, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Trinity Hall finished with nine points and six steals, while Chloe Brodie had seven points, eight boards and a pair of steals.

Janel Buckels scored six points and grabbed three rebounds. Caroline Tindell and Cheyenne Simpson both scored four points, while Reagan Pickard added three to round out the scoring.

Oakwood (14-10) received a first-round bye in the state tournament. Their next game will be this weekend against the Region 2 champion, Horizon Christian Academy of Cumming, in the state quarterfinals. Oakwood will have to travel for the game due to being the lower seed.

The exact date and time for the game was unknown as of press time.

Tuesday, the Lady Eagles led 12-0 after the first quarter and went on to outscore Praise 19-0 in the third after taking a 19-7 lead into halftime.

Hall scored 11 points, collected three steals and pulled down two rebounds. Tindell had a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 10 points. Gilchrist had eight points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Pickard also knocked down a pair of threes. She finished with eight points and three boards.

Simpson had six points, four rebounds and three steals. Buckels had four points and two steals to go with a teamhigh nine rebounds, and Brodie added three points, four steals and five rebounds.

PRAISE ACADEMY BOYS 66, OAKWOOD 41

Last Monday night at UCS, the Eagles saw their season come to a close with a loss in the first round of region tournament.

Garrett Dempsey and Tomo Gilchrist led OCA (3-21) with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Ryan Phillips finished with seven and Joseph Dawson added five. Hunter Hickman scored four and John McDonough added two.
