athletes. Charles would do everything he could to help his grandsons succeed, including installing a personal athletic training camp in his own backyard.

Charles graduated from East Ridge High School. He fully apprentice­d as millwright and then served in the United States Army from 1967-1969 He served much of that time in Germany. Upon coming out of the service he worked the rest of his life as a millwright & master welder and retired at the age of 63.

In retirement, he spent the vast majority of time attending church and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons. He wanted to attend as many track and field meets, baseball and football games as possible to cheer on his grandsons.

A funeral service for Mr. Byrd will be conducted in the chapel of Lane Funeral Home and Crematory South Crest Chapel on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 2 pm with the Rev. Joy Kelly officiatin­g. Interment will follow the service at Lafayette City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 7 from 6-9 pm.

Sheila Caldwell Rushing, age 68, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Albertvill­e, AL. lovingly cared for and surrounded by family and Enhabit Hospice. Sheila was born to Delbert and Dorothy Caldwell.

She was a life long resident of North West GA. She attended GLHS and graduated from GNTC. Sheila was a career care giver. She always loved her elderly patients.

She is survived by her precious mother, Dorothy Caldwell, Fort Oglethorpe, GA, her beloved children, Scott Rushing, Fort Oglethorpe, GA and Amanda (Ryan) Roberts Albertvill­e, AL, grandchild­ren Kaleb Gant, Aiden Gant, Taylin Roberts, Kinsley Roberts, JB Roberts, siblings: Wayne (Brenda) Caldwell, Chickamaug­a, GA, Daryl Caldwell, Chattanoog­a, TN, Rhonda (Grant) Beasley, Chickamaug­a, GA and Rita Brown, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. She is survived by nieces, Jennifer Caldwell Hart, Valerie (Chad) Schwitz and nephews, Stefan (Carmen) Caldwell, Nick Cordes, Matt (Ashley) Hampton, Jacob (Kristen) Hampton, Josh (Elizabeth) Cordes, 3 great nieces and 8 great nephews, and one great great nephew. She was preceded in death by her father, Delbert Caldwell.

Sheila loved her family with all of her being. She relished being Nana to her grandchild­ren. She loved Jesus and exhibited bravery and faith facing her illnesses. She loved her little dog Sally. She never wavered in smil24, 1954 - ing and saying I love you, even on dark days. She was a talkative, most kind and forgiving person who never held a grudge and never met a stranger.

Sheila cared for her Mama until she became too sick to do so. Even after she moved to Alabama, she called and texted to check on her Mama.

Visitation at 4:00 and Service at 5:00 will be held at Elizabeth Lee Church in Chickamaug­a, GA on Wednesday, March 8th in the sanctuary. Friends and family are welcome. Following the service, a reception will be held for family and friends in Fort Oglethorpe.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that anyone who wishes to make donations can be made to A Paw and a Prayer rescue service or Elizabeth Lee UMC.
