Oakwood bounces back after region losses

Up 26-24 with one period left to play, the Oakwood Christian Lady Eagles saw a possible region victory slip from their grasp as visiting Unity Christian rallied for a 41-35 win in Chickamaug­a this past Thursday night.

UCS improved to 5-0 in region play, while Oakwood was 3-2 in region play entering this week.

Mana Gilchrist scored 15 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked two shots for OCA. Samantha Harris had six points and eight rebounds. Cheyenne Simpson scored four points and collected two rebounds, while Janel Buckels and Noelle Sullivan had three points apiece. Buckels also grabbed a team-high 12 boards.

Trinity Hall had two points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Chloe Brodie scored two points and added five rebounds and two steals, while Reagan Pickard helped out with two rebounds and three steals.

UNITY CHRISTIAN BOYS 56, OAKWOOD 44

The Lions improved to 5-0 in region play in the nightcap, while the Eagles fell to 0-4 in region play.

Graham Meyer had a team-high 16 points for OCA to go with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ryan Phillips added 13 points, seven boards and four steals and Isaiah Staven finished with six points, two rebounds and three assists. Three points each by Jayden Patterson, Cason Baggett and Colt Harmon rounded out the scoring. Ryan Davis picked up six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

OAKWOOD GIRLS 41, FAIRVIEW CHRISTIAN 13

In Athens, Tenn. on Friday, the Lady Eagles managed just four points in the first quarter, but erupted for 17 over the next eight minutes to take a 21-6 lead into the locker room. They outrebound­ed Fairview 34-9 on the night and committed just six turnovers.

Gilchrist scored 10 points in the second quarter on her way to a 17-point evening. She also added seven rebounds and three steals. Brodie and Ruby Foster each scored four points and grabbed three rebounds, while Simpson had four points and one rebound as OCA improved to 14-7 overall.

Harris added three points, five boards and a pair of assists. Reagan Pickard also had three points to go with two rebounds. Trinity Hall scored two points, pulled down three rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. Buckels had two points and seven rebounds, while Noelle Sullivan scored two points and had two rebounds.

OAKWOOD CHRISTIAN BOYS 47, FAIRVIEW CHRISTIAN 40

The Eagles snapped their losing streak in Friday's finale, thanks in part to a 20-point first quarter. They outrebound­ed their hosts 36-27 on the night and committed just nine turnovers, while forcing 17 on their opponent.

Staven had a big night with 14 points, two rebounds

and two steals. Phillips pulled down 10 boards to go with eight points, four assists and four steals. Meyer scored six points and had eight rebounds, along with three assists, while Baggett put up six points, two rebounds and two assists for Oakwood (5-17).

Davis got in the books with five points, six rebounds and two assists. Harmon's night consisted of four points, four boards and two assists, while Patterson added four points, three rebounds and two steals.
