Wilcox, Pitts earn league awards
Heritage High School alum Cole Wilcox was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for April 8-14 by the league office last Monday.
Wilcox made his first start of the season for the Class AA Montgomery Biscuits the previous week. He pitched five hitless innings to pick up the victory, striking out four and walking one. The run he allowed was unearned.
The 6-foot5, 232-pound, 24-year-old right- hander is the No. 12 overall prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays organization.
PITTS EARNS SOCON HONOR
Chattanooga's Baileigh Pitts was named the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week the league office announced last Monday.
Pitts, a Ringgold High alum, started all three games against UNC Greensboro in left field. She went 6-for-12 (.500) during the previous weekend, helping Chattanooga retain its spot at the top of the SoCon standings. She recorded a double, a home run and a sacrifice fly and finished with seven RBIS in
the series.
In the opening game on Saturday, Pitts went 4-for4 with four RBIS. She was a triple shy of the cycle, leading off with a single in the second, adding an Rbi-double in the third, belting a solo home run in the fifth and collecting a two-rbi single in the sixth to put the Mocs up 6-3 for the win.
She drove in the Mocs' second run in a 6-5, nine-inning victory in the second game on Saturday. Pitts added a pair of RBIS in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. She grounded out to third, driving in the Mocs' second run of the game, while her single to centerfield in the fifth gave UTC a 4-1 lead.
This is the second Socon Player of the Week honor for Pitts this year and the third for Chattanooga. She previously won the award on March 4, while shortstop Kailey Snell took the honor on April 1.
