Ok­la­homa State’s Weath­ers re­turn­ing af­ter sus­pen­sion

Ok­la­homa State guard Michael Weath­ers, who was charged with grand lar­ceny in Septem­ber and sus­pended from the team, was al­lowed to re­turn to prac­tice.

Ok­la­homa State coach Mike Boyn­ton made the an­nounce­ment in a state­ment on so­cial me­dia.

Ac­cord­ing to Payne County court records, Weath­ers pleaded guilty to a mis­de­meanor charge of know­ingly con­ceal­ing stolen prop­erty and re­ceived a two-year de­ferred sen­tence. He made a pub­lic apol­ogy on so­cial me­dia on Thurs­day for what he called a “ter­ri­ble de­ci­sion” to steal a purse. the Year award win­ner Des­tiny Pitts and four of the top five scor­ers from a team that fin­ished 24-9 last sea­son and won an NCAA Tour­na­ment game.

When the Go­phers start their sched­ule Fri­day night in front of a packed house, though, the fans will be most ex­cited to see the head coach.

Lind­say Whalen will take the court with her new team in the opener against New Hamp­shire, one of the most-an­tic­i­pated de­buts in women’s col­lege bas­ket­ball this year. Three months af­ter an­nounc­ing her re­tire­ment from the WNBA, Whalen has be­gun her full-time fo­cus on the pro­gram she once helped build.
