Man fatally shot at Carolina Place Mall, store worker arrested
A man was shot and killed at Carolina Place Mall on Sunday, and a store employee has been arrested, according to Medic and the Pineville Police Department.
The shooting happened at the DTLR store in the mall, just a few minutes after the mall opened at noon Sunday, police said. DTLR sells athletic and “urban lifestyle” clothing and shoes for men, women and children, according to its website.
The victim walked into DTLR and got into a fight with the employee before the shooting, police said. Investigators believe there may have been an “ongoing dispute” before the fight Sunday.
The victim was pronounced dead inside the store.
The suspect turned himself in to Pineville police less than an hour after the shooting, police said in a statement, but charges had not been filed as of 5:45 p.m. Sunday.
The police department did not release the names of the victim or the suspect Sunday night.
Dillard’s and other stores near DTLR in the mall were closed after the shooting, but the rest of the mall stayed open, WBTV reported. Police believe the shooting is an isolated incident.
Guns and “illegal weapons” are not allowed at Carolina Place Mall, according to the mall’s Code of Conduct. Police say they’re trying to find out how the employee had a gun, WBTV reported.
