Matthews shoots even par in 1st round

Bran­don Matthews fired an even-par 72 Sun­day in the first round of The Ba­hamas Great Ex­uma Clas­sic, the Dupont na­tive’s first Web. com Tour event of 2019. He was tied for 49th when dark­ness sus­pended play.

Matthews teed off on the back-nine Sun­day at San­dals Emer­ald Bay Golf Course, where he shot 1 un­der after nine holes.

Matthews played strong in the front-nine, too, mak­ing birdie on hole Nos. 1 and 4,

but he also bo­geyed par-four No. 3 and ended with a dou­ble-bo­gey on par-five No. 9.

Matthews, who is six strokes off the lead, has a round-two tee time at 11:45 a.m. to­day.

The Golf Chan­nel is broad­cast­ing the sec­ond round of The Ba­hamas Great Ex­uma Clas­sic at 2 p.m. to­day.

A 24-year-old grad­u­ate of Pittston Area, Matthews also played in the tour­na­ment last Jan­uary, when he shot 1-un­der 287 and placed 41st.

Wilkes and Mis­eri­cordia split a swim meet on Sun­day, with the Colonels men post­ing their first win over the Cougars in four sea­sons and the Mis­eri­cordia women claim­ing vic­tory at the An­der­son Cen­ter.

Justin Burda led the Wilkes men with wins in the 200 and 100 fly

Grace Nikol­ski won three events for the Cougars on the women’s side.
