Matthews shoots even par in 1st round
Brandon Matthews fired an even-par 72 Sunday in the first round of The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic, the Dupont native’s first Web. com Tour event of 2019. He was tied for 49th when darkness suspended play.
Matthews teed off on the back-nine Sunday at Sandals Emerald Bay Golf Course, where he shot 1 under after nine holes.
Matthews played strong in the front-nine, too, making birdie on hole Nos. 1 and 4,
but he also bogeyed par-four No. 3 and ended with a double-bogey on par-five No. 9.
Matthews, who is six strokes off the lead, has a round-two tee time at 11:45 a.m. today.
The Golf Channel is broadcasting the second round of The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic at 2 p.m. today.
A 24-year-old graduate of Pittston Area, Matthews also played in the tournament last January, when he shot 1-under 287 and placed 41st.
Wilkes and Misericordia split a swim meet on Sunday, with the Colonels men posting their first win over the Cougars in four seasons and the Misericordia women claiming victory at the Anderson Center.
Justin Burda led the Wilkes men with wins in the 200 and 100 fly
Grace Nikolski won three events for the Cougars on the women’s side.
