Soriano’s double powers Yankees

Yankees 1, Mets 0: Alfonso Soriano’s RBI double in the seventh inning broke up a scoreless duel at Citi Field, lifting the visiting Yankees last night in New York.

Rookie reliever Dellin Betances (2-0) struck out six in a row for the Yankees in the sixth and seventh innings. Jacob deGrom (0-1) allowed one run and four hits in seven innings in his major-league debut.

DeGrom, meanwhile, lined a single to center in his first at-bat, ending an 0-for-64 skid by Mets pitchers to start the season. It was by far the longest hitless drought by a team’s pitchers to begin a season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the next worst were the 1914 St. Louis Browns, who started 0 for 45.

LAST NIGHT’S HIGHLIGHTS

Twins 4, Red Sox 3, 10 innings: Aaron Hicks delivered the winning single in the 10th inning off Andrew Miller to lift host Minnesota. Will Middlebrooks tied the score for Boston with a two-run single in the ninth off Twins closer Glen Perkins. Brewers 4, Pirates 3: Khris Davis hit a gameending, two-run single and host Milwaukee rallied in the ninth off closer Mark Melancon.

St. Louis Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. will lead a seven-member committee to find a successor to commissioner Bud Selig. The committee will offer a candidate or candidates to Major League Baseball’s executive council, which is to make a recommendation to owners. Selig, who has been commissioner since 1992, announced last fall that he will retire in January.

New York Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran was placed on the 15-day disabled list because a pain-relief injection did not ease the effects of a bone spur in his right elbow.

The New York Mets placed catcher Travis d’Arnaud on the sevenday concussion list after he was hit by Alfonso Soriano’s bat on the top of his hockey goalie-style mask on Tuesday. Manager Terry Collins said d’Arnaud sets up behind the plate unusually close to the batter, which helps him get more strike calls but increases his risk of being hit during a batter’s swing.

As expected, Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow today.
