Kiss between gays sign of current culture

-

I respond to the Thursday letter “Passionate kiss between men is not must-see TV” from James W. Walker. I was waiting for someone to write a letter to show his or her bigotry toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Not too many years ago, it was “unnatural” and “sinful” for a black man to kiss a white woman or even to look at her. In fact, he probably would be lynched for such a “horrible” thing. Now most of us think nothing of it.

I admire football player Michael Sam for doing what was natural for him and his partner. Most gay people see Sam as a person who walks his talk and are proud of him. It only goes to show that not all gay men are effeminate, as most gay men are stereotyped on television.

I imagine that a lot of gay people are not that “impressed” when they see “graphic heterosexual content” (Walker’s words). I would much rather see an honest gay man than a closeted gay man who lives his life as a lie.

Twenty years from now, or maybe sooner, we will look back at Walker’s outcry and just shake our heads. I am sorry that he is unable to keep up with today’s cultural changes that are slowly letting millions of LGBT people to express themselves openly.

And for all anyone knows, the same-sex couple two doors down might be married in another state. LGBT people are sons and daughters, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, dads and mothers, ministers, teachers, prisoners, artists, authors, husbands and wives and the butcher, baker and candlestick maker.

Each is one of God's wonderful creations. BERNARD MARTIN
