Sounders 4, Real Salt Lake 0: Marco Pappa, Chad Barrett and Obafemi Martins each scored second-half goals and host Seattle ended Real Salt Lake’s season-opening 12-game unbeaten streak yesterday.

Gonzalo Pineda also scored on a first-half penalty kick for the Sounders (9-3-2). Pappa’s goal was his first of the season, and Barrett scored for the second straight game, giving him three goals this season. Martins scored his sixth.

Although Seattle won its league-high fifth straight home match, Salt Lake (6-1-6) lost for the first time, missing a chance to set a Major League Soccer record for longest undefeated streak to start a season.

“It was a fantastic run that we went on, but I’m trying to make sure the team will react the same way I do: We have work to do, and it’s on to the next game,” Salt Lake coach Jeff Cassar said.

Los Angeles (12-0 in 1996 and 10-0-2 in 2010) and Kansas City (10-0-2 in 2000) had 12-game season-opening undefeated streaks.

“We talked about it before the game that we wanted to break the streak and keep the record for a couple of people,” Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said. “But mainly, we talked about us being No. 1 going against No. 2, and we have to show what we’re made of.”

Salt Lake also had an overall 16-game regularseason unbeaten streak (8-0-8) end. Impact 2, Revolution 0: Andres Romero and Jack McInerney scored as host Montreal ended New England’s winning streak at five and its undefeated streak at seven. Romero scored in the third minute, and McInerney in the 38th. United 1, Sporting Kansas City 0: Fabian Espindola scored his teamleading seventh goal of the season to lead host D.C. over Kansas City. Bill Hamid made five saves to preserve his third shutout and D.C.’s fifth this season. Kansas City’s its winless streak stretched to five games as D.C. climbed past it into second place in the Eastern Conference. Earthquakes 2, Dallas 1: Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi broke a tie in the 45th minute and San Jose defeated host Dallas for its first road victory of the season. San Jose played with a man advantage after Dallas’ Adam Moffat received a red-card in the 37th minute.
