Seven-goal run helps Ohio end skid

-

The Ohio Machine ended a three-game losing streak and handed the defending Major League Lacrosse champion Chesapeake Bayhawks a 15-11 loss yesterday in Annapolis, Md.

Seven straight goals by the Machine (2-3) in the second half erased a two-goal deficit and sent the struggling Bayhawks (1-4) to their third consecutive loss.

The Machine tied a franchise record for victories in a season. Ohio went 2-12 in each of its first two years.

Marcus Holman led Ohio with four goals, and Logan Schuss and Peter Baum each had three. Kyle Harrison scored twice and Steele Stanwick had three assists.

Chesapeake jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 4-1 before the Machine scored four goals in four minutes to end the first period. Baum’s second goal of the game yielded a slim 7-6 lead at halftime.

Momentum switched to Chesapeake after the break as the Bayhawks scored three straight goals to forge a 9-7 lead.

Then the Machine clicked into gear with a seven-goal run, including two goals by Schuss. After Stanwick found Holman for his fourth goal, Ohio led 14-9 with seven minutes remaining.

The Bayhawks managed two goals and attempted to rally, but the Machine’s defense held strong in front of goalie Brian Phipps, who made eight saves.

Harrison found the back of the net with less than a minute left to close out the scoring.
