POWELL — Olentangy school district’s administrative offices could head south to make space for preschool students.

The school board is considering leasing a 40,000-square-foot office building at 7840 Graphics Way and moving the district’s administrative offices from its current location at Shanahan Middle School. That would free space at the school for 12 preschool classes and two activity spaces, according to Sharon Jurawitz, a member of the district’s facilities committee.

Leasing the building, formerly the home of Modern Medical Inc., would cost the district $479,000 a year. Shanahan said the cost of renovating the building for its new use is estimated at around $888,000.

Jeff Gordon, Olentangy’s director of business management and facilities, said the board does not have a long time to make a decision. He said another potential tenant has expressed interest in the Modern Medical building and the owner wants to hear back from the district by the end of March.

“They won’t hold that location for a long time,” Gordon said. vacant since Cosi left the building in October.

The chain, founded in 2012, opened its first central Ohio location in February 2015 near the Ohio State University campus. It also has locations near Cincinnati and Canton, with plans for additional stores throughout the state.

Details about the Worthington project are few, but a Blaze spokeswoman, who declined to reveal an opening date, said the store would fit well in the busy area of Worthington.

“It’s always encouraging to see a fast-growing company come to Worthington,” Economic Development Manager David McCorkle said, but added the city has had “very limited interaction” with Blaze.
