Big third quarter pushes Bradley to victory

Hilliard Bradley used a 25-point third quarter Thursday night to pull away from visiting Teays Valley and win 63-39 in a Division I district tournament quarterfin­al.

Braden Norris scored 20 points for the Jaguars (22-1), and three teammates also reached double digits in points: Isaiah Speelman, Matt Allocco and Zach Hummel.

Brett Carson had nine points to lead Teays Valley (10-14).

Abdul Kanu scored 18 points, including 10 in the second quarter, as host DeSales (18-6) defeated Centennial (5-18). Caden Sanchez had 16 points for the Stallions.

Kyle Matoszkia had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the fifth-seeded Johnnies (18-5) in their win over visiting Granville (14-10). Jack Lonzo added 11 points.

Lucas Thompson scored 30 points and the secondseed­ed Falcons (22-2) defeated the thirdseede­d Cavaliers (15-9) at Ohio University in Athens. Colin Woodside added 18 points and passed 1,000 points for his career.

Shaylin Waugh had 27 points to send top-seeded Harvest Prep (17-5) over visiting Fisher Catholic (11-11). The tandem of Brandon Balnoschan and Brandon Baker combined for 54 points to pace the host Eagles (20-4) against the Lakers (8-15). Millerspor­t’s Zane Purvis had 27 points.

Daniel Nyarko paced Gahanna Christian (1510) with 23 points in its win over host Delaware Christian (12-12). Dylan Sino and Sloan Howard had 19 and 12 points, respective­ly, for Gahanna Christian. Mason Peddicord had 17 points and Peyton Walker 15 as the eighth-seeded Green Wave (8-15) downed the seventhsee­ded Eagles (12-12). Caleb Wears scored 19 for visiting Patriot Academy.

With balanced scoring led by Connor Stevens (15 points), the sixth-seeded Knights (13-10) defeated visiting Danville (7-12). The Blue Devils were led by Skyler Durbin with 29 points.

Devin Pearl had 36 points in the win by the host Pirates (18-6) over the Flames (9-13). Pearl made six three-pointers. 3:30 p.m. today (team competitio­n) and noon Saturday (individual competitio­n) Hilliard Bradley $8, available at the door

Brecksvill­e Broadview Heights will be prohibitiv­e favorite to win its 14th straight title and 17th overall. The Bees scored 148.025 points in winning the Northeast District title. Brecksvill­e senior Tessa Phillips, an Illinois signee, will be the all-around favorite. She scored 37.775 points in winning the district. ... Central District runnerup Olentangy, second to Thornville Sheridan with 137.425 points, was the only area team to advance. Mattee Bonanno and Olivia Boone lead a deep squad. ... The top area individual­s are Bethany Lange of Worthingto­n Kilbourne and Bethany Hurt of Dublin Coffman, who shared the all-around title in the district meet with a score of 35.925 points. Lange is making her third appearance as an individual; she also qualified once as a team participan­t. They are among 12 area qualifiers. Mary Dimitroff of Big Walnut placed in the top 25 in all four apparatuse­s and took 12th all-around last year at the state meet. Hurt was 16th all-around and Lange 25th. ... Central Ohio hasn't crowned a team champion since Upper Arlington in 1995. The area has claimed just three all-around champs in the 44-year history of the meet. Jillian Stranges of DeSales was the last in 2001. The last area competitor to win an apparatus was Gracey Brown of DeSales (balance beam, 2009).
