Hockey wins in Big Ten quarterfinal
David Gust scored twice in a 1:13 span of the third period and Ohio State broke free from Michigan State to win 6-3 in a Big Ten quarterfinal on Thursday at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
The Buckeyes (21-10-6) will play second-seeded Wisconsin (19-14-1) in semifinal at 4:30 p.m. today.
With the score tied at 3, Gust tallied the go-ahead goal just 25 seconds into the third period on the power play, then put the Buckeyes up by two at 1:38 with a shot from the right circle.
The Spartans (7-244) led 3-2 after the first period after scoring three goals in a span of just over five minutes. Matt Tompkins, who allowed the three goals on 10 shots in the first, finished with 26 saves.
Track and field
Ohio State sophomore Sade Olatoye was named Big Ten indoor field athlete of the year as voted by league coaches. The Dublin Coffman grad, who also was first-team All-America, becomes the first woman in program history to receive the award. She also is the school’s first woman to win both the weight throw and shot put at a Big Ten championships.
Men's volleyball
Miles Johnson and Nicolas Szerszen combined for two dozen kills as secondranked Ohio State rolled to a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-21, 25-15) over No. 10 Loyola-Chicago. The Buckeyes improved to 20-1 and remain atop the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association standings at 9-0.
Baseball
Ohio State’s home opener against Xavier was postponed because of weather. The teams will begin the series at 3 p.m. today.
