26 high-school students injured

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Virginia State Police say at least 26 Ohio high-school students and one adult were injured in a school bus crash this week.

The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register newspapers report that the bus, carrying varsity football players from Buckeye Local High School in Rayland, Ohio, slammed into a tree near West Liberty, West Virginia, Thursday evening.

The students were on their way to watch a football practice at West Liberty University, which is across the Ohio River from the Buckeye Local school, which is in Jefferson County.

State police say speed appears to be a factor in the crash, which occurred on Route 88, just south of West Liberty University. The driver of the bus, whose name wasn’t released, was cited, the State Patrol said.

The injured students were taken to hospitals in West Virginia and Ohio. Officials say several students suffered severe injuries, but none is believed to be life-threatening. A spokesman for Wheeling Hospital said 16 crash victims came to that facility, with four admitted, including one who was in intensive care.

A spokeswoman for Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling and East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry, Ohio, said another 10 patients were treated at OVMC and one at East Ohio. Two of those 11 were admitted, she said.

State police say there were about 40 people on the bus at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation. Leanna and Joseph: boy, April 18 Katelyn and Brad: girl, April 16 Megan/ boy, April 17 Joni/
