Men’s tennis clinches Big Ten title
Second-ranked Ohio State defeated No. 21 Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois, 6-1 on Friday to earn the outright Big Ten championship, becoming only the seventh program in any sport in conference history to win 12 or more straight titles.
The Buckeyes (25-3, 10-0) swept all three doubles matches, then got singles wins from top-ranked Mikael Torpegaard, JJ Wolf, Hugo Di Feo, Martin Joyce and Herkko Pollanen.
OSU will will look to complete its second straight undefeated Big Ten season on Sunday at Illinois.
Men’s gymnastics
Third-ranked Ohio State posted a 414.650 team score in the qualifying round of the NCAA Championships in West Point, New York, to advance to today's team finals. Sean Melton led the Buckeyes, recording the best rings score in the afternoon session (14.950).
Track & field
Daniel Mastropaolo won the men's javelin for host Ohio State at the Jesse Owens Classic, with a personal best throw of 212 feet, 1½ inches. OSU's Alyssa Kopp took second in the women's javelin (145-11½).
The Buckeyes' Jake Mandel (14 minutes, 35.80 seconds) and Mitch Leitch (14:40.40) placed first and second, respectively, in the men's 5,000 meters, and Christine Frederick was second in the women's 5,000 (16:45.27). Rachel Weber clocked the second-fastest time in program history in the women's 1,500 (4:21.08) to take second. Patrick Kunkel took second in the men's 3,000 steeplechase (9:07.11).
Women’s golf
OSU's Jaclyn Lee shot an even-par 72 to share sixth place after the first round of the Big Ten championships in Cincinnati. The Buckeyes are fourth in the team standings at 8 over, eight strokes behind leader Northwestern.
Softball
The Buckeyes scored twice on four hits in the sixth inning to cut Michigan State's lead to one, but the Spartans held on to edge Ohio State 3-2 in a Big Ten game in East Lansing, Michigan. Shelby Hursh pitched 4 innings for the Buckeyes (2712, 10-5), allowing three runs with four strikeouts against the Spartans (23-17, 6-8).
Women’s tennis
The fifth-ranked Buckeyes (24-2, 10-0) picked up their 11th straight win and seventh straight shutout with a 7-0 sweep against visiting Indiana (12-13, 3-7) in Big Ten play.
Baseball
OSU starter Yianni Pavlopoulos allowed 10 hits and surrendered seven runs in five innings as host UNC Greensboro (23-14) rolled to an 11-4 victory over Ohio State (15-23).
OSU scored three runs on two singles and a wild pitch to pull to 7-4 in the fifth, but Greensboro padded its lead with a four-run sixth.
