Drilling in forest is shortsighted
I respond to the Wednesday Dispatch article “Suit challenges drilling leases in national forest.” The Wayne National Forest is our only national forest and one of the most beautiful natural areas in our state. This is not something we should take for granted — only about 80 years ago, restoration began on a landscape that had been clear cut and torn up by irresponsible industrial development.
We should be grateful to the dedicated forest service workers and volunteers who labored to recreate a scenic forested area that provides habitat for sensitive wildlife, including endangered and threatened species, clean air and water, and a multitude of recreational opportunities, in what was once a barren landscape.
To lease this valuable public land for nonrenewable energy development threatens the serenity, beauty and health of the area. It is an insult to Ohio’s history and an assault on its future.
Gas and oil development on public land creates temporary jobs and wealth and does permanent damage. Imagine what we could have in another 80 years if we protect and care for this land? I support the lawsuit against the BLM and encourage everyone who is concerned about this issue talk to friends and neighbors, call legislators and donate or volunteer to support the efforts of the organizations fighting this battle.
