Report: Arts, culture have big economic impact

COLUMBUS — The nonprofit arts and culture industry generates $412.3 million in annual economic activity in central Ohio, according to the new Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 national economic-impact study.

The study said the arts and culture industry in central Ohio supports 14,980 full-time equivalent jobs, generates $46.8 million in local and state government revenue and $373.4 million in household income for residents.

“This study confirms the importance of the contributions made by the non-profit arts and cultural sector to our community and our economy,” said Tom Katzenmeyer, president and CEO of the Greater Columbus Arts Council.

In addition to spending by organizations, out-of-town visitors to cultural events often

stay overnight in a local hotel. In central Ohio, that money supports 6,791 full-time equivalent jobs and generates $24.8 million in local and state government revenue.

Arts organizations also provide other benefits, such as arts education programs in schools, access to national and international touring acts, and tourism and business development, Katzenmeyer said.

Nationally, the study reports, the nonprofit arts industry produces $166.3 billion in economic activity every year, resulting in $27.54 billion in federal, state and local tax revenue. In addition, it supports 4.6 million full-time equivalent jobs and generates $96 billion in household income.

The report was conducted by Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education. opened in Cincinnati in 2010, made the second tier of the list, lauded as “on the cusp of greatness.”
