Newark Catholic’s late surge downs Watkins Memorial

Hunter Chapman threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and ran for a two-point conversion with 55 seconds remaining to rally Newark Catholic to a 15-14 victory over host Watkins Memorial in a nonleague game on Friday.

Chapman, who completed just 6 of 22 passes for 100 yards, found Derek Hawk for a 17-yard touchdown to complete a six-minute drive with five minutes left in the game.

On the team’s next drive, Chapman cut the deficit to one with a 48-yard TD pass to Lucas Pierce. A Warriors penalty on the Green Wave’s first two-point attempt put the ball on the 1-yard line, and Chapman ran in the conversion to win the game. Chapman led Newark Catholic (1-3) with 94 yards rushing.

Gabe Shroyer ran in both Watkins Memorial touchdowns, including a 1-yard plunge to give the Warriors (1-3) a 14-0 lead just over a minute into the fourth quarter.

Quarterbac­k Raymell Byrd gained 443 total yards and four touchdowns to help host Whitehall break free from visiting Hamilton Township in a nonleague game. With the score tied at 20 in the second quarter, Byrd ran for a 41-yard score, threw a 52-yard TD pass to Christian Gordon and ran for another TD from 15 yards out to give the Rams a 40-20 lead in the third. He finished with 264 yards on the ground and two TDs along with 179 yards passing and two scores. Rasheed Muhammad added 140-yards rushing and two TDs for Whitehall (3-1). Eric Bonte led Hamilton (1-3) with 228 yards passing and three touchdown passes.

Daniel Bangura had 331 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries as host Harvest Prep (3-1, 1-0) opened with a win over Worthingto­n Christian (0-4, 0-1) in the MSL Cardinal. Moses Davis twice found Isaiah Mullens for touchdown passes for Harvest Prep, which led 46-0 at halftime. The game was called with 7:52 left after a severe injury to a Worthingto­n Christian player.

Brady Neff passed for 187 yards and a touchdown and Will Riffle added 98 yards rushing and a pair of scores as Amanda-Clearcreek (3-1) posted a nonleague victory at Logan Elm (1-3). Noah Smith caught two passes for 99 yards and a score for Amanda-Clearcreek. Griffin Cheadle ran for 106 yards for Logan Elm.

Fairfi eld Union ( 3- 1, 1- 0) scored all of its points in the fi rst half in blanking visiting Circlevill­e ( 2- 2, 0- 1) in the Mid- State League Buckeye. Jared Porter rushed for 71 yards and returned an intercepti­on for a score, one of two pick- sixes for the Falcons.

Trent Davies rushed for 257 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries to lead host Buckeye Valley ( 3- 1, 1- 0) over River Valley ( 2- 2, 0- 1) in a Mid- Ohio Athletic Conference opener.
