Jerome beats Scioto on late trick play

Robert Cope took a lateral pass 79 yards for the winning touchdown with 2:44 left as Dublin Jerome downed host Dublin Scioto 21-17 in an Ohio Capital Conference, Cardinal Division game Friday night.

Cope trailed receiver Trey Bellengee, who caught a short hitch pass before turning and dishing the ball to Cope on the designed play.

QB Hayden Schell led the Celtics (2-2, 1-0) with 149 yards passing and two touchdowns, along with 110 yards rushing. He hit Ryan Keys with a 54-yard TD pass to give Jerome a 15-14 lead, before Griffin Crosa gave the Irish (1-3, 0-1) a 17-15 lead late in the third on a 31-yard field goal.

Kyron Rogers led Scioto with 214 yards passing and a pair of scores, one to Tobias Thomas, who had 127 yards receiving. — No. 8 in the latest Division I state poll — committed three turnovers and were held scoreless in the second half. Marcus Ernst had 128 yards passing for Coffman, including a 26-yard scoring strike to Cam Scott that produced a 14-7 lead in the first half.

Mitchell Okuley’s two touchdown passes in the first half held up as Olentangy Liberty (3-1) held off host Hilliard Davidson (1-3) in nonleague action. Okuley finished with a 79.2 completion percentage, completing 19 of 24 for 189 yards. Ben Roderick caught the second TD pass to give Liberty a 17-7 lead before halftime. Cody Little accounted for 364 total yards and six touchdowns — four passing and two rushing — to lift Franklin Heights (2-2) over host Westland (1-3) in nonleague action. Little finished with 256 yards passing and 108 rushing, and he opened the game with an 85-yard TD pass to Ray McDonald, who finished with 101 yards on three catches.

John Applegate ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns, and visiting Olentangy Orange (4-0) scored 28 points in the second half to down Big Walnut (0-4) in a nonleague game. The Pioneers piled up 301 yards on the ground and rallied from a 10-7 halftime deficit. Tyler Ronk threw for 179 yards and a score for Big Walnut.

Three rushers topped the 100-yard mark to propel visiting Lancaster (2-2) over Newark (0-4) in a nonleague game. Alex Widener led the way for the Golden Gales with 161 yards and four touchdowns, and Shea Goss and Brandon Barnette each managed 114 yards and a touchdown.

Jimmy Weirick passed for 196 yards and a touchdown and ran for two scores as host Pickeringt­on North (3-1) routed Westervill­e Central (2-2). Ty Wiley had two receptions for 95 yards, including a 46-yard scoring strike from Weirick in the second quarter as the Panthers built a 28-3 halftime lead.

Mike Lowery accounted for 194 yards and four touchdowns through the air as host Gahanna (3-1) doubled up New Albany (1-3) in a nonleague game. Justus Harris led the Lions with 127 yards and a touchdown rushing, and David Miller had eight catches for 102 yards and a pair of scores.

Guy Cowans-Wright had 19 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown as host Reynoldsbu­rg (3-1) got past Central Crossing (1-3) in a nonleague game. The Raiders amassed 393 yards on offense and scored for 14 points in the first quarter.

Jamir Jackson had three touchdown runs in the first half as visiting Pickeringt­on Central (3-1) topped Groveport (0-4) in a nonleague game.
