Review finds officers’ acts justified
An internal review board of the Columbus Division of Police has ruled that two officers were justified in shooting a robbery suspect and striking him with a patrol car last year.
Officers John Holloway and Kenneth Dale acted within division policy, according to a review by the Firearms/ Police-Involved Death Review Board.
On Jan. 14, 2016, officers were called to O’Reilly Auto Parts, 1455 Parsons Ave., on a report of a robbery involving two masked men.
SWAT-team members were conducting a stakeout there after more than a dozen robberies had occurred in the area. SWAT advised patrol officers to slow their response and allow the suspects to leave the store to prevent a potential hostage situation. The suspects left through a back door and got into a waiting car.
Police stopped the car near South High Street and East Morrill Avenue with three people inside: 33-year-old Ramone Wright, 37-yearold Clifton Satterwhite and 24-year-old Vandyke Chao Nu.
Satterwhite, who was in the front passenger seat, got out of the car to flee. Officers Holloway and Dale saw Satterwhite reach into his waistband, authorities said. Holloway shot Satterwhite once in the abdomen with his service weapon, while Dale struck Satterwhite with his police cruiser.
Satterwhite was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in stable condition.
Satterwhite had been released early from state prison in 2015. He had been serving a 16-year sentence for robbing a Whitehall autoparts store in 2003 and was originally due for release in 2019.
He now faces federal charges stemming from this case, including interstate robbery, brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence and felony possession of a firearm.
This was the fourth shooting incident for Holloway.
