Akron pulls out win on Gladney’s TD catch

AKRON — Kevin Gladney made a one-handed grab of a 36-yard touchdown pass from Thomas Woodson with 4:46 remaining and Akron beat Buffalo 21-20 in the Mid-American Conference on Saturday.

Akron (5-4, 4-1) took a half-game lead over Ohio in the East Division. Ohio plays Miami on Tuesday.

Woodson hit 21 of 29 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns.

It was the first career touchdown for Gladney, a fifth-year senior.

Buffalo (3-6, 1-4) answered with an 11-play, 45-yard drive but Tyree Jackson threw incomplete on third-and-6 and Adam Mitcheson missed a 46-yard field goal attempt with 1:51 left. Akron picked up two first downs to run out the clock.

Buffalo took a 20-14 lead on Emmanuel Reed's 10-yard touchdown run with 14:25 remaining. Reed finished with 117 rushing yards and two scores.

NO. 2 MOUNT UNION 51, OTTERBEIN 14: D'Angelo Fulford threw five touchdown passes and Mount Union (8-0, 7-0) clinched a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference championsh­ip with a rout of visiting Otterbein (5-3, 4-3). It's the 28th conference title for Mount Union, all since 1985. Logan Stepp and Steve Irwin each threw TD passes for Otterbein, which was limited to 205 yards of total offense.

OHIO WESLEYAN 34, OBERLIN 26: Brian Berry passed for 295 yards and three touchdowns to lead host Ohio Wesleyan (4-4, 4-3) past Oberlin (2-6, 1-6) in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Berry tossed 3-yard scores to Jonah Markovits and Hunter Baker in the first half as the Battling Bishops built a 28-10 halftime lead. Zach Taylor threw for two TDs and ran for one for Oberlin.

BALDWIN WALLACE 52, CAPITAL 34: Baldwin Wallace (5-3, 4-3) scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter and pulled away to beat visiting Capital (1-7, 1-6) in the OAC. Jake Hudson threw two scoring Akron’s Fransohn Bickley hauls in a 23-yard touchdown pass just beyond the reach of Buffalo’s Roy Baker during the first quarter. The host Zips won 21-20.

AREA STANDINGS passes in the third quarter as Baldwin Wallace built a 45-21 lead after leading 24-21 at halftime. Thomas Wibbeler passed for 286 yards and four TDs for Capital.

NO. 16 ILLINOIS STATE 35, YOUNGSTOWN STATE 0: James Robinson rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns to help

Illinois State (6-2, 4-1) control the ball in a rout of Youngstown State (3-5, 1-4) in the Missouri Valley Conference. Markel Smith rushed for 124 yards for Illinois State, which rushed for 299 yards and held the ball for 36:37. The Redbirds forced two turnovers and had five sacks. They limited the Penguins to 147 total yards.

DAYTON 27, BUTLER 22: Alex Jeske threw a 2-yard TD pass to Adam Trautman for the go-ahead touchdown with 9:20 remaining and host Dayton (4-5, 3-3) rallied to beat Butler (5-4, 3-3) in the Pioneer League. Butler built a 22-10 halftime lead behind running back Sam Schrader, who ran for two first-half touchdowns and passed for another. Jeske finished 13 of 27 for 172 yards and carried 11 times for 67 yards.

OHIO DOMINICAN 39, WALSH 21: Grant Russell passed for two touchdowns and ran for two, and visiting Ohio Dominican (5-3, 5-0 Great Midwest Athletic Conference) defeated Walsh (2-7, 2-3) for its fifth consecutiv­e victory. Russell completed 22 of 29 passes for 272 yards, including a 7-yard TD to Cory Contini and an 8-yard scoring strike to Devanaire Conliffe. EJ Colson rushed for 139 yards for the Panthers.

DENISON 45, HIRAM 14: Alex Minton rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns and Canaan Gebele ran for two TDs as host Denison (5-3, 4-3) romped past Hiram (2-6, 1-6) in the NCAC. Gebele hit 14 of 18 passes for 181 yards and a score.
