Late run by Purdue turns back Louisville

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Vince Edwards scored 15 points, and Carsen Edwards and Dakota Mathias spurred a late run Tuesday night to send Purdue past Louisville 66-57 in the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge.

Carsen Edwards and Mathias both finished with 13 points for the Boilermake­rs (6-2).

Purdue coach Matt Painter let 7-foot-2 center Isaac Haas play most of the final 15 minutes with three fouls and the Boilermake­rs down 33-27. Over the next 2:05, Haas drew five fouls on the Cardinals and sent two of their starters to the bench with four fouls. When the 16-3 run ended, the Boilermake­rs led 43-36 lead with 9:12 to go.

The Cardinals (4-1) answered with eight straight points to retake the lead, but they couldn’t close it out. Carsen Edwards and Mathias spurred the decisive 11-4 spurt before Purdue sealed the win at the free-throw line. putback with 7.1 seconds remaining. Devonte Graham scored a career-high 35 points, Malik Newman added 17, and host Kansas (6-0) ran roughshod over Toledo (3-3). Tre’Shaun Fletcher and Nate Navigato scored 12 points apiece for the Rockets.

J.P. Macura scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half, and host Xavier (6-1) beat Baylor (5-1). The Musketeers recovered from their first loss, against Arizona State, by controllin­g the boards and putting together decisive runs in each half. They never trailed after an opening 21-8 spurt.

CJ Walker scored 24 points and Phil Cofer added 19 to lead visiting Florida State (6-0) past Rutgers (6-1). Eugene Omoruyi scored 22 points to lead the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers’ Corey Sanders added 20 points, and Deshawn Freeman followed up his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 16 rebounds.
