MLS delays next pick for expansion

-

Major League Soccer is postponing a decision on its next expansion team until next year.

A day after selecting Nashville, Tennessee, as one of its next two additions, MLS said Thursday it still is considering which market to add from among Cincinnati, Detroit and Sacramento, California.

MLS announced last December that it would select its 25th and 26th teams during the second or third quarter of 2017 and they would start play by 2020. Twelve areas submitted bids the following month, when MLS said it would announce the two selected by the end of the year. Contenders were pared to four finalists on Nov. 29, and the groups made presentations to the league’s expansion committee on Dec. 6. commissioner Rob Manfred because of a pattern of inappropriate behavior going back at least 10 years, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Accusations against Bowman included shoving a team executive, having escorts at a work party, berating employees and having relationships with subordinates. Baseball officials — including the former commissioner Bud Selig — were aware of complaints about Bowman but did not discipline him.

The PGA Tour and the Puerto Rico Tourism Company said the Puerto Rico Open will return as a 72-hole, official tournament in 2019 and 2020.

The event will be held at TPC Dorado Beach.

The Puerto Rico Open, held opposite a World Golf Championship in March, has been part of the tour schedule for 10 years and has raised $690,000 for charity groups working with children and health issues. McNeill and Justin Thomas aced the 137-yard hole, forcing the charity to give almost $200,000 to fans around the green.

Old White Charities Inc. took out an insurance policy on the payouts, but a federal appeals court saif the policy only covered holes at least 170 yards long.
