Carter’s 3 helps West Virginia escape Baylor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Jevon Carter sank the go-ahead three-pointer with 57.5 seconds left and No. 2 West Virginia escaped with a 57-54 victory over Baylor on Tuesday night.

West Virginia (15-1, 4-0 Big 12) struggled to make shots but extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 15, the Mountainee­rs’ best since winning 22 straight in the 1988-89 season.

Lamont West and Daxter Miles Jr. led West Virginia with 12 points apiece.

Baylor’s Manu Lecomte scored 13 points and Jo LualAcuil Jr. had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

West Virginia, which had little inside success on offense against the taller Bears (11-5, 1-3), shot 31.1 percent from the field and was held to its lowest point total of the season. (14-4, 3-2). The Boilermake­rs have won 12 in a row, while the Wolverines had their seven-game winning streak snapped. After Haas hit the first of a one-and-one for the lead he missed the second. Michigan rebounded and Charles Matthews took a desperatio­n shot from just past midcourt that bounced off the rim.

Trae Young scored 22 of his 27 points in the second half to help host Oklahoma (13-2, 2-1 Big 12) beat Texas Tech (14-2, 3-1). Young, a freshman point guard who leads the nation in scoring and assists, made just 1 of 12 shots in the first half. He made 6 of 11 in the second.

Malik Newman scored a career-high 27 points, Svi Mykhailiuk added 23 and host Kansas (13-3, 3-1 Big 12) pulled away in the closing minutes to beat Iowa State (9-6, 0-4).

Andrew Rowsey scored 31 points and Marquette (12-5, 3-2 Big East) used a 16-0 run in the second half to pull away to beat Seton Hall (14-3, 3-1).

PJ Washington made a steal that led to Kevin Knox’s go-ahead layup with 2:28 left, then added four points down the stretch to help host Kentucky (13-3, 3-1 Southeaste­rn Conference) rally past Texas A&M (11-5, 0-4). Two Washington misses at the free throw line set up a final chance for Texas A&M, but a long pass sailed out of bounds as time expired. Juwan Morgan scored 21 points and Josh Newkirk added 16 to help host Indiana (10-7, 3-2 Big Ten) hold off Penn State (12-6, 2-3). Tony Carr had 28 points and Lamar Stevens finished with 20 to lead the Nittany Lions, who have split their last four games. Tayler Persons and Trey Moses each scored 16 points to lead Ball State (11-5, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) past host Ohio (8-7, 1-2). Teyvion Kirk scored 17 points for Ohio, which hit just 37.7 percent from the field. Darrian Ringo scored 16 points, including 12 in the first half when host Miami built a big lead, and added seven assists to guide the RedHawks (9-7, 2-1 MAC) past Kent State (7-9, 1-2).

Tre’Shaun Fletcher had 21 points and host Toledo (10-6, 2-1 MAC) rolled to a victory over Western Michigan (10-6, 2-1).

Women

Azura Stevens came off the bench to score 19 points, leading host UConn (14-0, 4-0 American Athletic Conference) to its 100th consecutiv­e regular-season win, a rout of Central Florida (11-6, 3-1). Stevens hit nine of her 13 shots and grabbed 10 rebounds.
