Browns hire Haley as offensive coordinator

- From wire reports

Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson is finally handing off his offense.

Jackson, who has handled game-planning and play-calling duties while going 1-31 over two seasons, is hiring former Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

Jackson interviewed other candidates but chose Haley, who spent six seasons guiding Pittsburgh's highpowered offense before he was fired after a playoff loss last week, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Monday night.

A former Kansas City coach, Haley has a familiarity with the AFC North that will be a huge plus for Jackson as he tries to turn around the Browns after an 0-16 season.

Haley, 50, will inherit an offense in Cleveland with far less talent than he had in Pittsburgh, but the Browns are expected to upgrade through free agency and in the draft. They'll likely use either the No. 1 or No. 4 overall picks on a quarterback.

Haley reportedly had a strained relationship with Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and that disconnect could have hastened the Steelers electing not to renew his contract.

Shurmur takes reins as Giants coach

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur has been hired as the New York Giants head coach.

The Giants announced the hiring less than 24 hours after Shurmur and the Vikings were beaten by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title game.

Shurmur, 52, replaces Ben McAdoo, who was fired in early December with the team mired with a 2-10 record and owners and fans upset with his handling of the benching of two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning.

Shurmur returns to the head coaching ranks for the first time since leading the Browns in 2011-12, leading them to a 9-23 record.

Wilks gets 4-year deal as Cards coach

Arizona announced that Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Wilks had agreed to a fouryear contract to become the Cardinals’ coach.

Wilks, 48, spent one season as coordinator in Carolina, his 12th year as an NFL assistant. He spent five seasons before that as Panthers secondary coach.

Wilks replaces the colorful and outspoken Bruce Arians, who retired after five seasons and compiled a franchise-record 50 victories.
