Gerard scores twice as men’s hockey beats Michigan

Freddy Gerard had two goals and the Ohio State men’s hockey team scored three times in the second period to dispatch visiting Michigan 5-3 in a Big Ten game on Saturday night at Value City Arena.

Gerard tied it at 1 midway through the first period and added his second tally less than a minute into the second for the Buckeyes (17-54, 10-5-1). Ronnie Hein and Brendon Kearney added goals in the second period, and Mason Jobst scored an insurance goal in the third. Goaltender Sean Romeo had 28 saves against the Wolverines (12-12-2, 7-9-2).

Track and field

Zach Bazile won two individual titles for the OSU men at the Columbia Challenge in New York City. Bazile took first in the long jump with a leap of 25 feet, 2¾ inches and in the triple jump (515½). Other winners for the Buckeyes were Aaron Zedella in the weight throw (70-7¼), Eric Harrison Jr. in the 200-meter dash (21.23 seconds) and the quartet of Nick Gray, Andre Jeff, Asa Burke and Drelan Bramwell in the 1,600 relay (3:12.26). Sade Olatoye of Dublin Coffman won the weight throw (70-4¼) for the women’s team.

Women’s hockey

Anna Klein scored twice in the third period as host MinnesotaD­uluth (12-13-2, 8-10-2) completed a two-game sweep of No. 5 Ohio State (17-7-4, 10-4-4) with a 2-1 victory in the Western Collegiate Hockey Associatio­n play. Klein tied the score at 1 at 3:52 of the third and tallied an unassisted goal with 5:30 remaining. Jessica Convery made 33 saves to help preserve the win. Tatum Skaggs had the OSU goal midway through the first period. Kassidy Suave made 23 saves for the Buckeyes.

Men’s tennis

The second-ranked Buckeyes defeated Yale 4-0 at the Varsity Tennis Center to advance to the ITA Kickoff final. OSU, which will face North Florida at noon Sunday, earned singles victories from John McNally, Tim Siebert and Martin Joyce. McNally and JJ Wolf teamed up for a doubles victory, as did Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert.

Women’s gymnastics

The Buckeyes picked up their first win of the season at St. John Arena. With a seasonhigh 196.775 points, Ohio State beat Minnesota (195.775) and Illinois State (190.875). Ohio State won three events, including the vault (49.075), uneven bars (49.325) and floor exercise (49.575).
