Standoff follows killing at Far East Side home

A woman was fatally stabbed Thursday afternoon at a Far East Side home and a man police wanted for questioning was subdued with a stun gun along with his bull mastiff to end a nearly three-hour standoff, Columbus police said.

Police and Columbus fire medics were called to the home on the 6200 block of Chinaberry Drive about 4:27 p.m. on an initial report of a stabbing. A female victim was taken by medics in critical condition to Mount Carmel East hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police said. There is a possibility the victim might have been shot, police said.

The identity of the woman killed was not being released yet. She is the 18th homicide of 2018 in Columbus.

A man sat in the front yard with his bull mastiff dog on his lap after the stabbing, police said. A standoff with Columbus police and SWAT members ensued until about 7:15 p.m., when Tasers were used to subdue him and his dog, police said.

When the man was taken into custody, he was not armed. A gun had been recovered earlier on the property before the man and his dog were brought into custody, police said.

After the man was taken into police custody, he was taken by a Truro Township medic unit to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.

A neighbor, who wouldn’t give his name, said the couple that lived in the house where the standoff occurred were in their 40s and had a boy around 9. “They’re nice people ... I can’t believe it.”
