Jackets fire shots, but few find net

- By Steve Gorten sgorten@dispatch.com @sgorten

The Blue Jackets’ volume of shots on goal the past three games has been mind-boggling.

Not only was their 57 on Wednesday at the Toronto Maple Leafs the second-most in franchise history, but their 51 the previous night at the New York Islanders rank sixth and their 50 on Saturday against the New Jersey Devils rank eighth.

The problem: Just 13 of those 158 shots (8.2 percent) went into the net. That’s actually higher than the Jackets’ season average of 7.4 percent, which is the NHL’s lowest shooting percentage.

“We have a good flow offensively,” coach John Tortorella said after a 6-3 loss to the Leafs. “The next step is to finish.”

The Jackets, who have outshot their opponent the past seven games, led the league in shots per game (34.9) through Wednesday’s games. But they ranked 28th in goals per game (2.60).

Frederik Andersen’s career-high 54 saves for the Leafs was the second-highest total for a goaltender this season — Colorado’s Semyon Varlamov had 57 against Carolina on Nov. 2. More than anything else, forward Nick Foligno said, the Blue Jackets scoring only three goals was a byproduct of “Andersen making some pretty good saves.”

Bob could be busy

The Blue Jackets’ next four games are all against fellow Metropolitan Division teams and will be played over seven days.

After getting the night off Wednesday, a likely scenario is that goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky will start all four of those, Joonas Korpisalo will face the Chicago Blackhawks at home Feb. 24, and Bobrovsky will be back in net two nights later at Nationwide Arena against Washington before a three-game California trip.

Slap shots

Foligno’s season-high three-point game on Wednesday gives him 12 points in the past 15 games. Four of the goals have come the past six games. … The Jackets did not allow a power-play goal on Wednesday for the second time in three games after surrendering one in seven consecutive games. … Oliver Bjorkstrand’s assist against the Leafs was his fifth point in the past three games. Bjorkstrand was a teambest plus-3. Conversely, Matt Calvert was on the ice for four of the Leafs’ six goals. … Saturday’s noon practice in the Ice Haus will be open to the public.
