Moss to portray Rosemary Kennedy

- — From staff and wire reports

The many movies about the famed Kennedy family practically constitute a genre of their own — and soon there will be a new entry with a fresh angle: a biopic about Rosemary Kennedy, a sister of President John F. Kennedy.

“Handmaid's Tale” actress Elisabeth Moss will start in the film.

Rosemary Kennedy's story may be lesser known than those of her siblings, but it is a made-for-film tragedy: She underwent a botched lobotomy in her early 20s intended to help her developmental difficulties and lived in a facility in Wisconsin for most of her life before dying in 2005 at age 86.

“A Letter From Rosemary Kennedy” will be directed by Ritesh Batra (“The Lunchbox”), with a screenplay by Nick Yarborough. Moss replaces actress Emma Stone, who was set to star in the film, which was then titled “Letters From Rosemary.” is writing a memoir to be published in 2020 by Henry Holt and Co.

The book will explore the genesis of her personal catalog, filled with rock, folk, country, blues and gospel, stemming from her Southern roots.

“I have a lot to say and a big story to tell,” Williams said in a statement. “I want everyone to know what’s behind the songs and to know more about me than what people previously thought they knew. It’s time to tell my truth.”

Williams became known to a national audience with her self-titled album in 1988, when she was 35. She has since amassed three Grammys, including one in 1998 for best contemporary folk album — for “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.”
