Columbus police arrested a 12-year-old early Wednesday after he allegedly pointed a handgun at a woman and carjacked her car in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood, eventually crashing it following a police chase.

Police have charged Jeavion Darthard in juvenile court with aggravated robbery, hitand-run, reckless operation, failure to control and driving with no operator’s license, said Columbus police spokesman Sgt. Dean Worthington.

Darthard allegedly stole the vehicle shortly after midnight Wednesday while the owner was sitting in her car in the parking lot of a White Castle restaurant on the 800 block of East 5th Avenue, just east of I-71. She was in the process of leaving a friend’s house, she told police, when Darthard came up to her vehicle, pointed a gun at her and told her to get out.

The woman told police this was the second time the same boy had stolen a car from her. No further information about that incident was immediately available.

She exited the vehicle, and the youth got in and took off. Officers quickly located the car, but Darthard tried to flee from them, but crashed it, police said. He then jumped out of the car and tried to run away, but was apprehended.

In February, Darthard was listed on a missing children’s website, saying he was last seen Feb. 1 in Columbus and that police were asking for assistance in locating him.
