A man who fired several shots into a South Linden house Wednesday night during a drive-by shooting died after someone in the house returned fire, Columbus police said Thursday.

Deshaun Malik Coffman, 29, was found with a gunshot wound to the head in a car that crashed into a house in the 1000 block of East 20th Avenue near Hamilton Avenue.

He was pronounced dead at the scene 8:22 p.m., police said.

Coffman was found a block away from a house in the 1000 block of East 21st Avenue, where police and Columbus fire medics first received a report of a shooting at 8:12 p.m.

A woman was also injured in the shooting. The woman, whose identity had not been released early Thursday, was shot in the abdomen taken to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in critical but stable condition, police said.

Police said Coffman had driven by the East 21st Avenue house and fired several times, striking the woman. A third person returned fire, hitting Coffman in the head.

Coffman then crashed his car into the house on East 20th Avenue, where he died.

Investigators are working to identify the second shooter.

Family members and friends of Coffman could be heard crying near the crime-scene tape at the East 20th Avenue scene late Wednesday.
