Palmieri, Devils knock off Sharks

-

NEWARK, N.J. — Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs isn’t the only goal-scorer lighting it up in the NHL. Take a look at Kyle Palmieri of the New Jersey Devils.

Palmieri scored two goals for the third straight game and the Devils rallied from their first deficits of the season to beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 on Sunday.

Palmieri has six goals in three games, just four behind Matthews, who has 10 in six contests.

“Whatever he’s doing, he’s got to keep doing it. Two goals a game every night,” Devils goaltender Keith Kinkaid joked after New Jersey Devils right wing Kyle Palmieri celebrates after scoring a goal against the San Jose Sharks during the second period Sunday in Newark, N.J. making 37 saves to help New Jersey open the season with three straight wins for the second year in a row.

Palmieri had 24 goals last season but he didn’t get his sixth until just before Christmas in large part because he missed 19 games with injuries.

This year everything he shoots seemingly is finding twine.

“Getting some bounces. A couple have been pretty lucky,” said Palmieri, who is the first Devil to score two goals in each of the first three games.

DUCKS 3, BLUES 2: Ben Street and Andrew Cogliano scored thirdperiod goals, Ryan Miller made 29 saves, and the Anaheim Ducks rallied to beat the St. Louis Blues. Jakob Silfverberg also scored for the Ducks, who won for the third straight time at Enterprise Center and matched a franchise-best winning streak at St. Louis from Dec. 21, 2005, to March 31. 2007. Alexander Steen and Tyler Bozak scored for the Blues, and Vladimir Tarasenko had a pair of assists. Chad Johnson made 28 saves in his debut for St. Louis, which fell to 1-2-2 to start the season. JETS 3, HURRICANES 1: Bryan Little broke a tie with 2:09 left and Winnipeg beat Carolina to open a six-game homestand. Patrick Laine opened the scoring for the Jets at 4:14 of the third period, and Kyle Connor added an empty-net goal with a second left. Backup goalie Laurent Brossoit stopped 42 shots for the victory, allowing only Micheal Ferland’s tying goal.
