For­mer church de­stroyed, four other build­ings dam­aged in fire

Fire­fight­ers put out the re­mains of a fire on the cor­ner of In­di­anola and 8th av­enues near the Ohio State cam­pus on Satur­day morn­ing. Two cars were de­stroyed by the flames.

A fire that started in a va­cant for­mer church in Wein­land Park early Satur­day burned so hot and spread so quickly that cars parked on the street were torched and de­stroyed and even the lights on nearby lamp­posts melted.

The good news, how­ever, was that even though res­i­dents — in­clud­ing a few Ohio State Univer­sity stu­dents — had to be evac­u­ated from the sur­round­ing apart­ment build­ings, no one was in­jured by the three­alarm fire, said Colum­bus Fire Bat­tal­ion Chief Steve Martin.
