Self-defense cited in fatal shooting
The woman calling a 911 dispatcher with the Scioto County sheriff’s office Thursday afternoon said she had shot a man as he tried to break into her Blue Creek-area home.
When deputies arrived at the home in the 3700 block of Mackletree Road, they found Michael Bashaw, 34, of West Portsmouth, in the backyard dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. Blue Creek is about 15 miles northwest of Portsmouth.
The investigation found a prior connection between Bashaw and the female resident. Bashaw was convicted in Portsmouth Municipal Court in March 2018 of domestic threat, a misdemeanor charge, the sheriff’s office said.
In addition, from July through September, a civil protection order issued by a Scioto County judge had barred Bashaw from having contact with the woman.
The sheriff’s office said it considers the fatal shooting a case of self-defense, but the county prosecutor’s office will make the final determination.
The Montgomery County coroner’s office is to perform an autopsy.
