Iowa State thrashes No. 5 Kansas

Marial Shayok scored 24 points, and Iowa State routed No. 5 Kansas 77-60 on Saturday in Ames, Iowa, for its fifth straight win.

Freshman Tyrese Haliburton made four three-pointers and scored 14 points for the Cyclones (12-2, 2-0), who opened Big 12 play with back-to-back wins for the first time since 2015 after forcing the Jayhawks (12-2, 1-1) into a season-high 24 turnovers.

Despite getting outrebound­ed 41-26, Iowa State made surprising­ly easy work of Kansas.

The Jayhawks played without big man Udoka Azubuike, who was hit on the right wrist during Friday's practice. Coach Bill Self said about an hour before tip-off that X-rays on Azubuike's wrist were negative, but he was in too much pain to play.

NO. 1 DUKE 87, CLEMSON 68: Freshman Zion Williamson had 25 points, 10 rebounds and a spectacula­r 360degree dunk, and host Duke (12-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat Clemson (10-4, 0-1).

NO. 4 VIRGINIA 65, NO. 9 FLORIDA STATE 52: Kyle Guy scored 21 points and host Virginia (13-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) limited Florida State (12-2, 0-1) to just 15 field goals. NEW MEXICO 85, NO. 6 NEVADA 58: Anthony Mathis scored 27 points and host New Mexico (8-6, 2-0 Mountain West) limited high-scoring Nevada (14-1, 1-1) to just 33.3 percent shooting. The Wolf Pack also went 16 for 27 at the freethrow line.

NO. 15 NORTH CAROLINA 85, PITTSBURGH 60: Cam Johnson scored 15 points in his homecoming and visiting North Carolina (11-3, 1-0 ACC) made quick work of Pittsburgh (10-4, 0-1). Johnson, a graduate transfer from Pittsburgh, grabbed a season-high nine rebounds for North Carolina. EAST CAROLINA 73, CINCINNATI 71: KJ Davis scored 17 points, Shawn Williams 16 and Jayden Gardner scored seven of his 13 points down the stretch as host East Carolina (8-6, 1-1 American Athletic) held off Cincinnati (12-3, 1-1). Cincinnati's Jarron Cumberland drove to the basket with a chance to tie with one second left, but his shot was blocked by Justice Obasohan.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS 72, OHIO 66, OT: Lacey James scored 20 points, including the tiebreakin­g free throws in overtime, and visiting Northern Illinois (8-6, 1-0 MAC) beat Ohio (8-5, 0-1). Ohio's Ben Vander Plas was fouled making a tying three-pointer with 8.4 seconds left in regulation but missed the free throw. NIU missed a shot and a tip-in on the other end to send the game to overtime.

MARYLAND 77, RUTGERS 63: Jalen Smith had 16 points and six rebounds to lead visiting Maryland (12-3, 3-1 Big Ten) past Rutgers (7-6, 0-3). After Rutgers led 15-12, Maryland went on a 28-4 run in the final 8:55 of the first half to take a 40-19 lead into the break.

CAPITAL 71, MOUNT UNION 63: Caleb Cox had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and host Capital (11-2, 6-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) defeated Mount Union (11-2, 5-1). The Crusaders remained tied atop the conference with Marietta.

OHIO DOMINICAN 104, OHIO VALLEY 76: Ryan Hoyng and Sam Hickey each scored 24 points to lead host Ohio Dominican (9-4, 5-1 Great Midwest Athletic Conference) past Ohio Valley (5-6, 1-5). Hasan Varence had 21 points and 16 rebounds for the Panthers.

OHIO WESLEYAN 67, DENISON 58: Nick Carlson scored eight consecutiv­e points during a 12-0 first-half run that put Ohio Wesleyan (7-5, 2-3 North Coast Athletic Conference) ahead to stay in a victory over host Denison (5-7, 2-4).
