TELEVISION THIS WEEK

- — Chuck Barney East Bay Times

Ten shows to watch or record:

• “True Detective”

(9 p.m. Sunday, HBO): Fresh off winning a Golden Globe for his performance in “Green Book,” Mahershala

Ali headlines the third installment of the gritty anthology series. Ali plays retired Arkansas state police detective Wayne Hays, who seeks to solve a macabre crime that took place years earlier in the heart of the Ozarks. The story, filmed in Arkansas, plays out in three distinct time periods.

• “Valley of the Boom”

(9 p.m. Sunday, National Geographic): Remember Netscape? The wildly offbeat six-part miniseries captures the high-stakes drama and madcap craziness of the 1990s dot-com bubble (and bust). Bradley Whitford, Steve Zahn and Lamorne Morris lead the cast.

• “Victoria” (9 p.m. Sunday, PBS): Jenna Coleman returns as the title character in Season 3. As the saga resumes, the queen is pregnant with her sixth child, but she has plenty else on her mind, mainly the Revolutions of 1848, when Europe’s downtrodden begin calling for the overthrow of aristocratic rule.

• “The Passage” (9 p.m. Monday, Fox): The new drama series centers on a secret medical facility where scientists are experimenting with a dangerous virus that could lead to the cure for all disease — or, it could wipe out the human race.

• “Roswell, New Mexico” (9 p.m. Tuesday, the CW): The TV reboot craze continues with the new sci-fi drama, which reimagines the 1999-2002 cult series about humanalien romance. But now Liz (Jeanine Mason) and Max (Nathan Parsons) are adults, so it might not be nearly as fun. • “Temptation Island”

(10 p.m. Tuesday, USA): Speaking of reboots, do we really need another version of the 2001-03 series? The reality show follows four dating couples to Maui, where 24 eligible men and women engage them in the “single life.” Will the couples stick together or go separate ways? • “Deadly Class” (10 p.m. Wednesday, Syfy): Set in the late 1980s, the new series follows a homeless teen (Benjamin Wadsworth) who is recruited into Kings Dominion. Uh-oh. It’s a brutal private academy where the world’s top crime families send their next generation of assassins to be trained. • “Star Trek: Discovery” (8:30 p.m. Thursday, CBS All Access): It’s time to take to space again. The second season of “Star Trek: Discovery” finds the crew joining forces with Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) on a mission to investigate seven mysterious red signals and the appearance of an unknown being called the Red Angel.

• “Grace and Frankie” (out Friday, Netflix): The dynamic duo of Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin return for Season 5 of the comedy series. Their story picks up with the divorcees in search of a new home after ditching the retirement community.

• “Dynasties” (9 p.m. Saturday, BBC America, AMC, IFC, Sundance TV): Prepare to be captivated. David Attenborough follows up his “Blue Planet II” and “Planet Earth II” with another remarkable nature series that follows five of the world’s most highly endangered species: lions, chimps, tigers, painted wolves and emperor penguins.
